Barbara Madaj, MA (Hons), PhD

Barbara is a trained economist and sociologist. She completed her PhD at the University College London on migration of medical personnel. She has over 10 years professional experience in research focusing on developing and transition countries. Before joining LSTM she worked on studies for commercial clients, governments and public bodies, as well as doing academic and social research in Central and Eastern Europe, North Africa, the Middle East and Asia.

Barbara has experience in designing, conducting and analysing quantitative, qualitative and mixedmethods studies. Her current work involves supporting the development and management of monitoring and evaluation activities undertaken by the Centre for Maternal and Newborn Health. The main programme she is involved at present is Making it Happen, which aims to build capacity of healthcare providers in 11 countries in Africa and Asia on Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care (EOC&NC). The programme has a large M&E and operations research component with data collected from a variety of sources, including healthcare providers and facility records.

Barbara’s research interest centres around human resources for health and healthcare systems, including capacity building and system strengthening.
