Professor Catherine (“Sassy”) Molyneux PhD
Appointment: Senior Social Scientist, University of Oxford/Kenyan Medical Research Institute-Wellcome Trust Research Programme
Areas of interest: Research ethics, health systems research, governance, community engagement, intervention studies, treatment-seeking, equity, Africa
Background: I have been based at the KEMRI-Wellcome Trust research programme, and employed by Oxford, since 1994. My research work has focused on two main areas: the interface between health systems and households (including exploring household treatment seeking behavior, gender relations and affordability of health care); and the interface between health researchers and communities (including informed consent, community engagement, payments and benefits for research participants and communities, and social science ethics). My current main focus is my Wellcome Trust fellowship on community accountability; producing new thinking, evidence and recommendations around strengthening community involvement in biomedical research and health delivery in sub-Saharan Africa. This takes forwards my prior work and includes significant capacity strengthening elements. Future research will focus on health system and research governance, including internal accountability mechanisms; exploring formal policies and processes and how these are implemented and transformed in practice by actors operating at various levels of the health system for a range of health and research institutions and interventions.
