Dr Rakesh Kumar
Dr Rakesh Kumar has been trained as Doctor of Medicine (MD) at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi and is a member of the Indian Administrative Service since 1992. He has held several senior positions as Secretary, Department of Woman & Child Development, Medical Education, School Education and Additional Secretary (Health & Family Welfare), Government of Uttarakhand, and carries diverse experience in policy, planning and programme implementation in areas of Maternal and Child Health, Nutrition, Health Systems Strengthening, Non-communicable disease management & Tobacco control in India.
A policy-maker and public health strategist, Dr. Kumar has served as Health Specialist with UNICEF India, Project Director of World Bank funded Health Systems Development Project and Additional Executive Director of USAID supported Innovations in Family Planning Services (IFPS) Project in Uttar Pradesh. He has attended several prestigious fellowships/training programmes at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, Baltimore and Harvard School of Public Health, Boston, USA.
Currently, Dr. Kumar is Joint Secretary to the Government of India, Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, spearheading the Reproductive, Maternal, Newborn, Child health including Routine Immunization and Polio eradication and Adolescent health (RMNCH+A) initiative, for improved maternal, newborn, child and adolescent health outcomes in India.
