Professor Stephen Ward

Prof Stephen Ward received his BSc. in Physiology and Pharmacology from the University of Aston (1979) and his PhD in Pharmacology from the University of Liverpool (1985). From 1985 to 1986, he was Research Fellow, Division of Clinical Pharmacology, Vanderbilt University, Nashville, Tennessee before moving to Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM) and Liverpool University in 1986. There he held a number of research and teaching positions until 2000, before being appointed Professor of Pharmacology, Department of Pharmacology and Therapeutics, Liverpool University.  

He has been working as Walter Myers Professor of Parasitology at LSTM since 2002, becoming Deputy Director in 2004 and has established collaborative links with many organisations, including the Kenyan Medical Research Institute, Wellcome Trust Research Laboratories in Kenya, Centre for Drug Research, University Sains Malaysia, Thammassat University Thailand and GSK DDW.  

He has a key role in the Gates funded AWOL product discovery initiative. He was appointed Member of the MMV External Scientific Advisory Board in 2008.  

His most recent awards include the Dr Chitavat Sadavongvivad Memorial Medal from the Thai Pharmacology Society in 2010, the Thompson Medal Royal Society for Chemistry awarded in 2011 and the Sornchai Looareesuwan Medal in 2013.
